Tree Product Scavenger Hunt

Recommended Length/Duration: 20-30 minutes

Goals: students can identify products of wood in their homes and schools

(2-PS1-1: Plan and conduct and investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.; MS-PS1-3: Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society.)


  1. Discuss how most products we use come from trees, whether that be food products, furniture, paper, etc.
  2. Split the class into groups of 2 or 3. Give each team a clipboard with paper and a pencil.
  3. Have the teams walk around inside the school quietly identifying tree products and writing them on their clipboards for a certain amount of time.
  4. Gather the students back together and list off the items they found.
