Job Description

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum seeks marketing intern to conduct direct community outreach and grassroots marketing tactics to reach new and diverse communities for their 2025 season including attending events, handing out promotional materials at local businesses, and engaging in other on-the-ground in-person marketing activities. This paid position will be responsible for researching local organizations, points of connection, and events that serve underrepresented and BIPOC audiences for the Museum. Using a co-created outreach plan with Museum staff, the intern will attend promotional events, visit communities, and interface directly with these audiences with the goal to raise awareness of the Museum’s free admission and pay-what-you-can camps and expeditions, increase visitation, and welcome new youth into the Museum’s summer programs.

Previous experience with, or a focus in marketing is strongly recommended. A familiarity with schools, community organizations, or local outreach work in Chittenden and/or Addison Counties is an advantage but not a requirement. The intern must be able to provide or arrange their own transportation in order to conduct the in-person outreach portion of this role. A significant portion of the hours can be done remotely with the ability to come to the Museum or other locations on an as-needed basis.

Basic Qualifications

  • Previous experience or focus in marketing, communications, or community outreach for an event, business, or other similar organization.
  • Previous experience in customer service or other public-facing positions.
  • Comfort with public speaking or in-person marketing in large public settings.
  • Familiarity with any schools, community organizations, or local services in Chittenden and/or Addison Counties preferred but not required.
  • Strong team player and collaborative working style, able to work across departments and provide consistent and effective communication.
  • Great time management skills with the ability to work independently and stay on task.
  • Excellent communication skills and a welcoming attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an active listener.
  • Proficiency in Meta Business and working knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Interest in working in Museums/non-profits or community outreach.
  • Must have personal transportation to attend events and visit communities.
  • A commitment to collaboration and an enthusiasm for Lake Champlain, its history, and its future.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Researching and providing contacts with local organizations focusing in underserved and BIPOC communities in the Champlain region.
  • Developing a plan for in-person and digital outreach with support from Museum’s Marketing Consultant and staff.
  • Keeping track and monitoring responses from various group outreach.
  • Attending in-person events and visiting local communities with materials to promote Museum programming, free admission, and pay-what-you can youth programs.
  • Recording and providing content for social media and marketing outreach.
  • Coordinating and supporting the Marketing Consultant as needed.

Work Conditions

This position will include onsite and offsite work and requires staff to arrange their own transportation to offsite events.
