Join the Museum’s Co-Director of Archaeology, Paul Gates, for a free and engaging lecture on the Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard.

The Pine Street Barge Canal Breakwater Ship Graveyard is located on the waterfront of Burlington, Vermont and contains a number of abandoned vessels that give us a glimpse into the history of Lake Champlain. Representing a period dating from the early half of the 19th century into the middle of the 20th century, these shipwrecks are records of the changing social, economic, and technological trends of the Burlington waterfront. Paul will explain how he investigated the creation and history of this ship graveyard through the lens of behavioral archaeology and site formation processes.

The lecture will be held in the auditorium of the Hoehl Family Education and Visitor Center. The lecture will last approximately 30-45 minutes with a Q&A session afterwards.

This lecture is free to attend, no registration required.
