Yesterday the schooner crew bent the sails on the spars, readying for our departure next week out the Erie Canal. “But you can’t have the masts up in the Erie Canal,” you say. It’s actually easier to re-rig the boat when the spars and sails are a single package. We’ll be taking down the masts next week at Basin Harbor Club‘s dock (thank you, BHC and Brown’s Crane Service.)
We’ve posted the schedule for the this year’s tour: “Our Shared Heritage: World Canals Tour” that brings the schooner Lois McClure out the Champlain and Erie Canals. We will visit more than 20 ports-of-call along the way, welcoming aboard community members and students, and stopping at the World Canals Conference in Rochester, NY to share our region’s history with the larger canaling community.
This Sunday July 18 at 2pm Lois McClure Captain Roger Taylor will give a talk Alive and Well: Canal Boats in Europe, followed by book signing of his Elements of Seamanship, on board schooner Lois McClure. Hope you can make it – it will be a wonderful discussion. It’s all part of our weekend-long Small Boat Festival, which also includes a talk by Mystic Seaport’s Dana Hewson on the Restoration of the Whaleship Charles W. Morgan – that’s Saturday July 17 at 2pm.
